The online module for submission and processing of application forms for registration as OCI card holders and providing OCI miscellaneous services has been rolled out with effect from 1st January, 2016.  It is mandatory for the applicants to upload the supporting documents, photographs and the signature in the online system.

VFS Global is the only authorized Service Provider for the Embassy of India and the Consulates General of India across USA for Passport, Visa, OCI and Renunciation of Indian Citizenship services.

Residents of the following US States and Territories can apply for OCI at the VFS Application Centre, Atlanta: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virgin Islands.

Consulate General of India, Atlanta does not accept OCI applications directly from the applicants by walk-in or post.

Those who have not renounced their Indian citizenship may apply for Renunciation and on receiving the Renunciation Certificate may apply for OCI. Renunciation and OCI cannot be applied for together.

Instructions on Re-issue of OCI Card, Updation of New Passport  Particulars and Application for Special Permission

            The following instructions may be followed for re-issue of OCI Card and updation of passport particulars on acquiring new passport:

(i) Mandatory requirement of re-issuance of OCI Card each time a new passport is issued to a foreigner up to 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age has been dispensed with;

(ii) An OCI cardholder is required to get the OCI card re-issued only once when a new passport is obtained after completing 20 years of age.  Such OCI cardholder should apply for re-issue of OCI card on the OCI portal under OCI Miscellaneous Services: https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome and send the application to the Outsourcing Service Provider (VFS) as per guidelines given on the VFS website: https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/ind.  The fees for this service are: US$ 25 (OCI Fees), US$ 3 (ICWF), US$ 15.90 (VFS Service Fee) and optional service fees such as shipping charges;

(iii) An OCI cardholder is required to update the details of new passport and upload a copy of new passport, latest photo and signature on the OCI portal under OCI Miscellaneous Services: https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome each time a new passport is issued up to 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age; 

(iv) In case of those who have been registered as OCI cardholder as spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India/OCI cardholder,   the OCI cardholder is required to upload a copy of new passport, latest photo and signature on the OCI portal under OCI Miscellaneous Services: https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome  each time a new passport is issued.  Such OCI cardholder and his/her spouse will have to give a declaration that their marriage is still subsisting.  Copy of Indian passport of Indian spouse or Passport and OCI card of the OCI cardholder spouse shall also be uploaded in such cases;

(v) In case of Sl. No.(iii) an (iv) above, the updation of new passport particulars by uploading required documents may be done within three months of receipt of new passport.  Immediately on submission of the application, an e-mail will be sent to the OCI cardholder automatically acknowledging the submission of the application for updation of passport particulars.  After necessary verification, an acknowledgement e-mail will be sent to the OCI cardholder informing that the updated details have been taken on record.  This process does not involve submission of any physical documents to the Outsourcing Service Provider or the Consulate.  This service will be provided gratis.  There will be no restriction on the OCI cardholder to travel to/from India during the period from the date of issue of new passport till the date of final acknowledgement of his/her documents in the online system.

  1. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if there is a change in personal particulars of the OCI cardholder such as name and nationality, the OCI cardholder should get the OCI card reissued immediately on obtaining new passport with revised particulars.
  1. 3. As per Gazette Notification dated 4th March, 2021, OCI cardholders are required to obtain Special Permission from concerned authorities to undertake certain activities in India. In order to make it convenient to such OCI cardholders, a separate sub-portal under the name “Apply for Special Permission (only for OCI cardholders)” has been created in the OCI portal.  The link has detailed instructions as well as documents required to be submitted.
